Lindsay Mac @ The Black River Concert Series.

My expectations were moderate, I'd never heard of anyone playing the cello the way Lindsay did. My expectations were wholey inadequate for the experience I had last Saturday night. I was filled and renewed by the music and the presence of the Lindsay Mac band! Her manner was unassuming and her songs were soul delving and inspiring.
She plays her cello hung about her neck like a guitar and plucks and strums instead of bowing the instrument. Playing the cello in this was adds a folky, earthy tone to all the music and draws the listener in by the sweet and warm tones of the cello. Here songwriting was straight to the heart by the backdoor. I felt her lyrics move me and surprise me and her music, just the music, lifted me off the floor and into the skylight.
Now for the band. The guitar player was quiet and unassuming but perfect. Her tone and method of attack was perfectly complementory to Lindsay's style and I felt as if the guitar was an instrument of su-port to the entire song instead of an instrument of its own. The percussion sectioin was wild and full of energy. The rhythym was not just inthe drums but in the drummer.

This was another fantastic and spiritually enriching show and I would encourage anyone out there listening to see Lindsay Mac or listen to her music.

Well, I'm back and trying to blog again.

I have never seen such an engaging performer as Lipbone Redding. From the first note to the last drum roll he kept the audience in his living room with his incredibly personable charm and vitality. I would go to see him again and again. "Lipbone" is the name of his lip trombone sound. Without any devices or props he can make the perfect fascimile of a trombone sound with his lips. It really was something to see (and hear).

The band was tight and expressive and his songs were happy, rollicking and good humored. I highly recommend checking our Lipbone online or in person. You will not regret it.

The next concert is Lindsay Mac. From what I can gather she plays the cello like a guitar, strapped to her shoulders and plucked with her fingers. There is a great little youtube segment on her playing "Blackbird." I'm looking forward to more great music nad good wine next week, February 13th at 8pm at the Lewis County Historical Society in Lowville NY.

Kelly Flint and the Black River Valley Concert Series

As promised, I attended the Kelly Flint Trio concert in Lowville, NY this Saturday, 1/23/10. The music was quite good and the songs went from deeply personal to openly nostalgic. It was a good mix of musician's too. The guitar player used a 1950's Silvertone Tube Amplifier and a Silvertone guitar of similar vintage. His playing styel was reminiscent of the Ventures and other surf rockers. When you tie that into the upright bass players Vince Guaraldi-like jazz style, you get a whole new and interesting take on old songs. They performed a few Patsy Cline songs and many of their own compositions. It was definitely worth attending.
The next group to make an appearance at the Lewis County Historical Society will be the Lipbone Redding Orchestra. If you haven't heard this guy, you've got to hear it. Listening to the recording I've found online, I'd place him between Cab Calloway and Jack Johnson. It is a really interesting mix of music and very good songwriting.

Music in Northern New York

Like many people, I am amazed at the lack of live music in Northern New York. If you aren't into Metal or DJ's, it is difficult to find any original live music. A few years ago I stumbled upon a wonderful venue to see live music from artists who, though I've never heard of them, have been astounding in their originality and talent.

The Lewis County Historical Society hosts the Black River Valley concert series at their headquarters in Lowville, NY. The building is an old Masonic lodge that they are renovating with the proceeds from the concerts. The concert hall is set up like a coffee house with four or five to a table and a very relaxed atmosphere. they usually look for talent that is little known but very eclectic and they haven't disappointed so far. I've seen dozens of concerts there and everytime I've come away inspired and refreshed. They serve wine, coffee, tea and dessert in the lobby and while experiencing the concerts the audience is surrounded by artifacts of bygone years in Lewis county, including a sleigh hearse at the back of the room! That was a first!

This year the lineup kicked off to a great start with the legendary Aztec Two Step. This concert was one of the finest I've ever seen. The harmoneis were impeccable and the songwriting was superb. I've been a fan of Aztec Two Step for years so I recognized many of the songs. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find them interpreting their own songs in different ways. It wasn't a replay of an album, it was a revitalization of their discography. If you have ever seen them, do it again, if no, just do it.

Next up this weekend is the Kelly Flint Trio. Kelly Flint was the "sultry" voice of Dave's True Story and is now going solo. I've personally not heard her very much but I'm anticipating a great show. The show starts at 8pm in Lowville (7552 South State St.) on January 23rd. I know it is short notice, but it will be worth going.
